BONDI BOWL-A-RAMA LIVE ON FUEL TV THIS WEEKEND

The world's most iconic beach will host Australasia's premier skateboarding event this weekend and for the first time FUEL TV will deliver the event LIVE to action sports fans across the nation.

Set against the famous backdrop of Bondi Beach, the best skaters in the world will compete on one of the finest bowls in the world at Vans Bowl-A-Rama.

Entering its seventh year, the Bondi event will this year carry a prize purse of $60,000 AUD and has attracted the greatest cross-generational gathering of international skaters for any single event in the history of Australian skateboarding.

The main competition, which takes place on Saturday, is surrounded by a week-long festival of activities, drawing thousands of onlookers to the famous precinct to not only watch the action on the bowl but to take in the various art shows, live music performances and video premieres.

Adam Howarth, Fuel TV Channel Manager, said: “Vans Bowl-A-Rama is one of the truly iconic events in skateboarding and every year it seems to get bigger and better.”

“This is the first time that we have committed to broadcasting the event LIVE and the reaction we’ve received from the skateboarding community and all of our action sports tragics has been overwhelming. This will be an awesome event,” he said.

FUEL TV’s coverage will begin at 5pm AEDT this Saturday, with resident skateboard star and Pop Gun host Corbin Harris commentating on the action LIVE throughout the broadcast.

FUEL TV’S LIVE and EXCLUSIVE coverage of Vans Bowl-A-Rama is available to FOXTEL and AUSTAR subscribers.

Underbelly: TV Movies And Real Life Report, by Greg Tingle - 17th February 2011

G'day punters, journos, entertainment news junkies, high rollers - casino whales, gambling millionaires and billionaires, media tycoons, politicians, insiders, outsiders, law enforcement agencies, legal eagles ... one and all. You know who you are. This is the TV Mini Movie Underbelly and Real Life Underbelly special!... Media Man and Gambling911 go beneath the underbelly of Australia's underworld, real and fake...

Underbelly 'Infiltration' A Hit...

The Underbelly telemovie 'Infiltration' has been well received by Australian audiences, but may insiders were expecting it to be a "piece of crap". The producers' task was huge...to create and shoot, interesting and suspense-filled drama based on the autobiographical book by former policeman Colin McLaren, who waged a covert campaign to bring down the Griffith-based mafia. Infiltration worked, and that casting of Sullivan Stapleton as McLaren was key. It was a tight, 3-week production. Stapleton was in nearly every one of the 200 plus scenes with little preparation. His rendering of the McLaren character solid to great. It was a portrayal of McLaren as gutsy, intuitive and fun - a bloke trying his best in the force, despite often internal problems in the department. Stapleton nailed it posing as an art dealer to infiltrate Calabrian gangsters tied to the death of anti-drug campaigner Donald Mackay. In addition, the casting of Jessica Napier as McLaren's colleague Jude backed it up. Jude's lingerie added spark and sexiness. Infiltration was very good to great, but how long can the Underbelly franchise keep going before it gets old? Mind you, James Bond has being going since the 60's, so maybe people will still be expecting the show's death in a few decades time.

Underbelly: Blood Brothers...

Our friends at Network Nine have commenced production on crime-based telemovie Blood Brothers. The 98 minute self-contained movie is based on Robin Bowles' book of the same name. The screenplay will be written by the amazing talent, Victoria Madden. Described as "a chilling portrait of crime and punishment, a compelling insight into human nature, and a relentless fight for justice", it will portray the horrific 1993 Gilham family murders. Lisa McCune (Blue Heelers, Sea Patrol), Tony Martin (False Witness, Wildside) and Michael Dorman (Daybreakers, Suburban Mayhem, The Secret Life of Us) will lead a cast which also includes Jonny Pasvolsky (Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities), Jodi Gordon (Home and Away) and Frank Holden (Police Rescue, Underbelly, The Strip). Dorman plays Jeffrey Gilham, who was convicted of manslaughter of his younger brother Christopher. He claimed to have killed Christopher in a fit of rage after his sibling murdered their parents. However, Gilham was in fact suspected of murdering them, despite no charges being handed down on him. The story is told beautifully from the perspective of both Tony Gilham, the boys' uncle played by Martin, who campaigned for 14 to clear Christopher’s name. And Margaret Cunneen, played by McCune, the Crown Prosecutor who found herself arguing a seemingly unwinnable case to eventually convict Gilham of the murders. "Blood Brothers is the compelling drama of a shocking family tragedy," stated Jo Horsburgh, Network Nine's head of drama. "I have no doubt that 17 years after these awful murders, the audience will still be divided in their opinions about the truth of what happened. "The Blood Brothers telemovie is another creatively satisfying collaboration with Playmaker."
Nine will partner with production company Playmaker Media, who also produced Wicked Love: The Maria Korp Story for the network last year. "We are grateful for the support of the Nine Network, Screen Australia and Screen New South Wales," said David Taylor, Playmaker's principal alongside David Maher. "A great script has helped us attract an outstanding cast and one of Australia's leading directors, Peter Andrikidis (Underbelly, East West 101)." Production is set for just a few weeks away and insiders reckon it will air later this year on Network Nine of course, as the 9 dotter station attempts to be once again known by the masses as 'The One'.

Underbelly 'Tell Them Lucifer was Here' Ratings...

The first of the Nine Network's Underbelly telemovies, Tell Them Lucifer was Here, produced solid ratings for the broadcaster last week, but was nabbed in the final round by Channel Seven, says OzTAM numbers. Nine won the evening in primary channels, while in combined network shares, Seven took out total people and Nine won 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54. Underbelly averaged 1.377 million viewers, coming first in its timeslot and for the evening in total people, 18-49 and 25-54. It was second in 16-39. Bones proved to be a smart choice to go against the local crime franchise, holding up strong with 1.208m for Seven, while Brothers and Sisters tanked to 832.000. Ten struggled against the strong competition as Undercover Boss slumped to 608,000 and Good News Week returned to 461,000. Both programmes were 4th in their timeslot. In any event, viewers are getting treated to a great mix of crime drama and solid entertainment.

Underbelly's Babe Kassandra Clementi Could Be A Casino Babe If She Desires; Options Open For Hot Stuff Actress - Underbelly Files: Infiltration...

Underbelly's Kassandra Clementi plays one of the more goddess type characters in the TV series famous for being raunchy, but she has her own super sassy side (plus mind and body). Clementi, 20, plays Chelsea, the daughter of Colin McLaren, a Victorian detective who risked his life by going deep undercover within a local arm of the Calabrian mafia, in Underbelly Files: Infiltration. It's one of the more innocent roles in the racy crime franchise, known for its nudity and steamy scenes. "It's all pretty PG (for me)," she said. But Clementi shed the good girl image and amped up the sultriness in a fashion shoot of this season's animal prints, leather, feathers, and daring thigh-high boots. Clementi and her fellow actors met McLaren before filming the telemovie airing on Nine. "We all got to pump him full of questions. I wanted to get an understanding of Chelsea's home life, and the most important thing in her life, which was her father." Now the star of one of Australia's biggest shows, Clementi has her sights squarely set on the United States, with a hot and standout role in an American program in the works. The project is confidential you could say, but if all goes to the way she's mapped out, the Adelaide born-actress-babe, now based in Melbourne, will be causing waves this year, so blokes and babes, be prepared to be tantalised and titillated.

'No Ibrahim Link' To Sin City Sydney Gunfire...

Sydney coppers have now ruled out any link between a shooting in Sydney's south-west, and an attack on two members of the Ibrahim family just a night earlier. Police say 3 men were in a van at Leppington when shots were fired from a white Subaru car about 1:15am. A 39-year-old man sitting in the back of the van was shot in the stomach. The two men in the front were not injured, and they drove to a nearby house and called police. The injured man was taken to Liverpool Hospital where he is in a serious but stable condition. Police say there is no link to the previous night's attack on a nephew of nightclub owner John Ibrahim, Sam Sayour, and his cousin Gehad Hamid. The men were attacked on a suburban street at Old Guildford, and a third man was also shot. New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione has complained that his officers are facing a wall of silence over the recent spate of shootings. He says even the smallest piece of information can help take guns off the street. "These crimes are not random attacks. Generally they're targeted and so they will always stay silent," Commissioner Scipione said. "What we need is people that are on the periphery, those that know just that little bit to come forward and talk to us. We will guarantee your anonymity and we will certainly investigate it."

Ibrahim Family: Real Life Underbelly?...

On 13th January this year, Kings Cross nightclub king John Ibrahim's mother Wahiba was on the front porch of her Merrylands home in Sydney's western suburbs. Also in the front yard were her bikie son Sam and the family's ever-present bodyguard, "Tongan Sam" Ngata. Before you know it a number of shots were heard and Ibrahim fell to the ground, a bullet wound in each thigh. The Ibrahims are a family under fire. Over the last couple of years 7 separate shootings have targeted both male and female members of the well know family and their associates. Two Ibrahim brothers were shot, one almost fatally. Even John Ibrahim's sisters are fair game, as are some relatives.
Research points to either some alleged bikie and / or drug links, and domestic - personal relationship matters also come up in the mix. Coppers believe the violence will go on for quite some time. "These things never end well . . . it's coming to a head somehow," a boy in blue shared. The first family member to be targeted in the most recent spray of violence was Fadi Ibrahim, shot at 5 times outside his Castle Cove home in 2009. Police have identified the man they think is behind the shooting, however he hasn't been charged as yet. The 2nd shooting occurred last November at the Ryde home of Armani Haddad, John Ibrahim's sister. Her house was sprayed with 25 bullets while she was at home with the kids. A police theory is that the drive by is linked to another...at the home of her husband's brother and that both happenings may be domestic-related. Sam Ibrahim came to comfort the situation. Now its Sam who has been attacked, just last month. He's a seasoned bikie and alleged attempts to reform the Nomads Parramatta chapter by recruiting members of the Notorious gang is one theory being talked about as a reason behind his shooting. Some think the reason may be more personal. Ibrahim's people notified police a jealous boyfriend of a woman who fell for Sam decided to take action with gunshot. Even young members of the Ibrahim family have also been targets recently. Hassan "Sam" Sayour (19-year-old Ibrahim nephew) and Jihad Hamid (23) shot on the street in Old Guildford just last Sunday. Two other shootings have targeted an Ibrahim family associate, Notorious Sergeant at Arms Saber Murad. In the first incident, last November, Murad was whacked by 2 bullets at his Doonside home. Police have charged two men, one a Comanchero, over that incident. Coppers talk a a "wall of silence" surrounding the attacks. Fadi and Sam Ibrahim and Armani Haddad have all politely declined to give statements to police about the crimes committed against them. Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell made a statement saying police deserve co-operation and respect. "Given the recent escalation in gang-related crime, it's vital everyone, victims and witnesses alike, do everything possible to put the perpetrators behind bars," he said. John Ibrahim has had his dash of trouble with some of the Comancheros. Some members had left a calling card and message by trashing one of Ibrahim's Kings Cross nightclubs 3 years back and there has been an ongoing turf war in the region between factions of the Comanchero and Notorious, particularly over the security industry at Kings Cross. When police quizzed a Comanchero member why John Ibrahim had been targeted, he replied: "It's time." Ibrahim has a past linked with associations with bikies and underworld figures, including former 'King of the Cross' Louis Bayeh. He has been charged with murder and threatening witnesses in cases against two of his brothers but all charges were dismissed. A law enforcement source said: "There have been attempts on John's life. Some of the Comanchero are behind it." For Ibrahim, life goes on...having refused offers of police protection. He goes just about everywhere with Tongan Sam, or a similar bodyguard type. Coppers don't believe that all the shootings are an attempt to get to Ibrahim, who recently told friends he was planning to get out of "nightclub promoting" and focus on property development. Any rumours of a venture into pokies or casinos are just small talk, but never say never. Property development sounds like a safer bet at this stage of the game.

Australian And New Zealand Gambling And Casino News, by Greg Tingle - 17th February 2011

G'day everyone. It's yet another huge gambling and casino news updated from down under in Australia. We've got political fun and games, lovers VS haters, man VS machine, Big Brother VS The People, and you get the idea. Media Man and Gambling911 with your regular Aussie round up...

Pokies limits Likely To Cost Hotels Up To $4b'...

The Hotels Association says it would cost the industry up to $4 billion to comply with proposed new laws for pokies. The Federal Government aims to force gamblers to set limits on how much money they are prepared to lose before they play machines. But the Australian Hotels Association says the scheme would drive people to other forms of gambling, like illegal or online, and lead down the road to job losses. John Whelan from the Association has told anyone that would listen at a Parliamentary inquiry half of all machines would need to be replaced. "What's being asked of the industry this time around will involve a multi-billion dollar capital cost. It's very unlikely that those many venues or most venues around (have) the cash to do that, and it's equally unlikely that the banks will lend them the money to fund that capital cost."

Proposed Pokie Laws Will Send Smaller Clubs Broke...

Industry group, Clubs New South Wales, says the cost of complying with proposed new poker machine laws will send clubs across the region broke and put thousands out of work. The Productivity Commission has told a parliamentary inquiry, responsible hotels and clubs will barely notice the impact on revenue from the proposed laws designed to help problem gamblers. The new laws would require individuals to register and nominate a maximum spend amount and then use a USB card in converted machines. Clubs NSW Hunter spokesman, John Chin says his Hexham club will have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to convert 87 poker machines. "We're talking around $400,000 just to be compliant. I'm sure it's not going to do what they think it's going to do and that's to help the problem gambler." Chin says he understands the Prime Minister's dilemma, but she needs to understand the impact it will have on local clubs and 5,000 Hunter jobs. She had given him the agreement that she would push this through. We are fighting basically a life and death struggle for us and we are not going to give way, saying they can have it their way. We will fight this to the very end."

Higher Power At Work In Gambling; Godsend To Bendigo, Victoria...

Well respected Social welfare agency St Luke’s, has a rather new approach to tackle problem gambling...reaching out to workers at the Bendigo region’s gaming venues. St Luke’s will kick off its new venue support worker program, aimed at helping staff at gaming venues recognise and assist potential problem gamblers. The initiative comes as a new Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation survey of gaming venue managers and staff showed about two-thirds were less than comfortable to approach someone with a gambling problem and that almost 10% had never been instructed on dealing with problem gamblers. Trevor Rice is one of 26 Gamblers Help venue support workers across Victoria and covers 23 venues in the area from Gisborne and Maryborough to Swan Hill and Echuca. "I go and work out with the venues what training they require. Most venues are looking at how to approach people, and I think it’s a confidence thing. We’ve had some good responses. Some are very proactive, and all of the managers are very positive about the program." Rice said a problem gambler may exhibit one of more than 100 signs, including playing for long periods, attachment to a particular machine, aggression and continued visits to ATMs. Bendigo Stadium chief executive officer Eric Pascoe said Rice began training staff at the stadium last week after he initiated a meeting with Rice and Gamblers Help counsellors at St Luke’s. "The stadium is a community organisation, and we wanted to be a leader in helping problem gamblers and take a very active approach. Some insiders question if a staff member should be required to look out for over 100 different signs in players, thinking that may be more the thing for a body language expert of psychologist, attempting to move the responsibility and legal burden to a club employer. A Media Man spokesperson said "In regard to watching out to problem gamblers, the program has some merit, but it looks like there may be some buck passing going on already. Club workers are not psychologists. One may question if them having to remember up to 100 signs of a problem gambler is fair cop. An agro patron being questioned if they have a problem may also potentially wish to argue or get in a fight with who questions them. This proposal is fraught with questions and risks".

Queensland Banana Benders Punters Spend $5 Million Bucks Per Day On Poker Machines...

Banana Benders sank almost $5 million a day into poker machines in the first month of this year. The state's more than 42,000 machines collected nearly $153 million in metered wins in January. This is about $10 million more than January last year and up more than $18 million for the year to date. Queensland Council of Social Service director Jill Lang advised the number of at-risk and problem gamblers lay between 8 and 9% and were responsible for about 40% per cent of money generated. Some insiders question the numbers, with social groups known to sometimes use misleading numbers in attempt to push their own agenda. Lang said QCOSS supports many of the recommendations from the ongoing federal parliamentary inquiry into gambling, including pre-commitment machines, where gamblers set a limit. She advised that along with slowing down the betting rate and removing ATMs from the area where possible, pre-commitment was a good idea, despite industry saying this week that it would be too expensive. Clubs Queensland CEO Doug Flockhart said despite the higher year-to-date figures, the floods had led a drop in revenue in the central west by almost 44%. He said pokies upgrades would cost between $3500 and $5000 per machine. "Pre-commitment machines are another tool in the box. Any addict, whether it be alcohol or drugs, until they make the decision to stop, there'll be no way to stop them".

Aussie Hotels Want Pokie Limit Trial...

The Australian Hotels Association has just about begged the government to carry out detailed research and trials of mandatory pre-commitment poker machines before rolling out restrictions nationwide. The AHA's written submission to an inquiry on pre-commitment pokies was critical of the push by independent Andrew Wilkie, the committee's chairman, to have the pre-commitment system rolled out in 2014, despite the Productivity Commission saying it should begin in 2016, with exemptions for small hotels until 2018. The AHA warned that it could cost the industry up to $2.5 billion to upgrade machines to make them capable of having a pre-commitment function limiting the amount of money punters can wager. Older machines, mainly in regional areas, would have to be completely replaced at a cost of $25,000 each to make them capable of having a mandatory pre-commitment. In its submission, the AHA said it wished to work with government "to develop a sensible, evidenced-based way forward - that will continue to minimise harm from gambling, but will not close our businesses, slash our workforce and reduce our community support". AHA's national chief executive Des Crowe and director for responsible gaming John Whelan fronted the joint standing committee on gambling reform yesterday. The Productivity Commission also appeared before the committee yesterday highlighting the need for any trial of pre-commitment technology to be held in a large area, such as Tasmania. The commission warned that a small trial zone would allow people to drive to the next suburb where they could play unrestricted. The commission also dismissed concerns that people's privacy could be breached by new technology. On Friday the committee will reconvene in Hobart, where it will hear from Anglicare and the Australasian Casino Association. Media Man has interviewed dozens of journalists and gaming experts about pre commitment over the past few months with all questioned saying they don't see the Gillard government proposal offering a total solution and that trials overseas showed that the pre commitment doesn't work properly. It's widely known that gamblers and problem gamblers will gamble no matter what government restrictions are put in place. An uprising off illegal poker and casino game events are expect in Australia on an invitation only basis. This follows the U.S and Canadian pattern, where if some forms of gambling become illegal or too restricted, they thrive in the underground, falling off the map of government reports and bean counter types.

Crown Casino Loves Rugby Union Too...

James Packer's Crown Casino is enjoying the company of other sports fans at a lunch for Melbourne's new rugby union team, the Rebels. 1200 people showed their support at the lunch, with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and opera singer Teddy Tahu Rhodes part of the fun. Mike Brady gave a preview of his new rugby anthem. Rebels board member Gary Gray, whose involvement with Victorian rugby goes back to the failed 2005 bid to get a licence from the Australian Rugby Union, said rugby's support in Melbourne was a complex and varied mix. Rugby is an international game. You have a lot of people that have been starved for it in this town - expats both from interstate and from New Zealand, South Africa, the UK, even France and other parts of Europe where rugby's popular." Gray said there was also strong support from the local south Pacific island community, which has fielded many top players, and local clubs. "In Victoria there's the south Pacific island community, some of the state schools play rugby, most of the private schools play.". Crown Casino continues to back sport, having recently sponsored the NRL's Melbourne Storm.

Adelaide SkyCity Casino Feels Some Pain...

The popular casino's pre-tax earnings climbed to $16.1 million as its owner predicted subdued future trading. Sky City's half year profit fell 2.2% to $51 million ($NZ67.1 million) and chief executive Nigel Morrison said a quiet retail environment would impact on gaming revenue in Adelaide as it works with the State Government on developing the Riverfront precinct. Adelaide Casino lifted revenue by just $500,000 to $74.4 million but pre-tax earnings climbed 5.6 per cent to $16.1 million in the six months to December 31 thanks to "good cost controls and food and beverage revenue", Morrison said. Smoking bans in Darwin impacted on Australian casino earnings which fell 2% to $NZ47.2 million. The economic environment in this country remained challenging, particularly in discretionary retail, while the Australian discretionary retail sector was now also reporting more challenging times, Morrison said. Normalised net profit climbed 2.1% to $51 million after adjusting for comparisons without its divested cinemas group, the company said. Normalised revenue from ordinary activities rose 3.1 per cent on a year earlier to $NZ410.1 million.
An interim dividend of 8c a share has been declared. Gamblers from the orient - China and Thailand into the company's Auckland casino boosted the company's international business division, which almost doubled revenue to $1.1 billion. That growth underpinned the decision to invest in increased capacity and world class facilities for international customers in Auckland, Sky City said. Sky City reiterated its full year profit guidance to $96.1 million. Talks with the South Australian government on the proposed Adelaide Casino redevelopment and casino regulatory reforms were continuing, Morrison said. "We continue to stress the importance of a level playing field in respect of casino regulation and believe in the potential of the Adelaide market to deliver strong growth should some of the current challenges be adequately addressed," the company said. Sky City shares are trading steady at $2.49.

Sky City New Zealand And Australia Half Yearly Profits Drop...

The economic slowdown in New Zealand and Australia has led to a fall in half-year profit at casino operator Sky City Entertainment Group. The company made $67.1 million in the six months to December, a decrease of 6% on the same period a year ago. Stripping out a contribution from its now sold cinema operations, the listed company's underlying profit rose 2% to $67.4 million. Revenue rose 3% to $448 million, with growth in Adelaide and Hamilton partly offseting a fall at Darwin due to the introduction of a smoking ban.
Sky City chief executive Nigel Morrision says earnings at its flagship Auckland casino remained flat, as the subdued economy deterred local gamblers, although turnover doubled from high rollers, mainly from Asia. He says revenue rose 9% for the first six weeks of this year compared with the same period a year ago. Looking ahead, Sky City expects a full year profit of $127.4 million, compared with last year's normalised profit of $129 million.
A dividend payout of 8 cents a shares has been declared. Media Man analysts were not prepared to comment on what the financial position the firm would likely to be in come end of year results.

Sex sells well beyond SI Swimsuit Issue; Oprah lands Vick interview

Game On! bloggers Tom Weir and Reid Cherner are just glad to be off the bubble and now looked at as automatic qualifiers.

SI Swimsuit issue

RC: It was very nice of the magazine to offer me an 800-number, so that I could skip the upcoming swimsuit issue, and extend my subscription instead.

But it wasn't clear that if I took them up on the offer whether that would put my consecutive issues read streak in jeopardy.

My real concern is that models Shannan Click, Kenza Fourati, Izabel Goulart, Alyssa Miller and Kate Upton are appearing for the first time and I'm conflicted on whose rookie card I should be investing in.

Actually, with my daughter the same age as the models, I've stopped thinking about being on the beach with them and just how nice it would be to be on the beach period.
TW: I can't believe there are still people out there who get worked up about the SI Swimsuit Issue being a tool of sexism.

How about directing some of that same scrutiny at women's magazines?

The latest cover of Cosmopolitan includes a headline on "The Sex Quiz" and another that shouts "Get Naked!" And try to find any women's mag that doesn't send a constant message about getting thinner or curvier.

Tiger Woods
TW: After all the grief Tiger has taken, can't we give him a pass on this one? Yes, he broke ranks with the anti-saliva regulations of the gentlemanly game of golf regulations. But if baseball penalized players for spitting the game would be out of business in 24 hours. And is anyone going to pretend that John Daly has never let one fly on the golf course?

RC: Golfers take to their sick bed when a course misses its latest manicure. So I'm not sure a lot of them want to be using Tiger's putting line when he's done.

Michael Vick
TW: I think Oprah is losing her edge. Vick has been out of prison for nearly two years, and now she books him on the show? I doubt Vick's appearance will generate anything new. Unless, of course, he shows up in a chinchilla coat.

RC: For a woman whose book club included "Freedom," "Fall on Your Knees" "The Sound and the Fury" and "The Measure of a Man" I would say Oprah's couch is the perfect place for Vick.

Although the QB may find scrambling away from her scrutiny more difficult than expected.

Jerry Richardson
RC: The Panthers owner decided it would be a good idea to disparage the intelligence of Drew Brees and Peyton Manning during contract negotiations.

I don't know beans about contracts, but I know that Brees and Manning play a game at a level that the former RB-flanker Richardson is not familiar with.

Note to owners: You have the money and you have the leverage but nobody is paying to watch you sit in your luxury box.

If I'm the two QBs, I'm telling him to talk to the hand. That would be the hand that has hoisted the Super Bowl trophy.

Maybe it should be the owners who are required to take the Wonderlic Test.

TW: I don't have any problem with Richardson asking players tough questions.

I also don't have a problem with asking Richardson how he went from a playoff team in 2008 to having a 2-14 club that mailed it in last season.

Albert Pujols
RC: Hey, he's not a machine, he's just Albert.

If anyone deserves 10 years and $300 million its the Cards' slugger. But a 41-year-old machine can take new parts. A 41-year-old slugger can't. (Credit: USA Today)

PartyGaming, PartyCasino, Bwin Do Deal With Las Vegas Land Based Casinos, by Greg Tingle - 15th February 2011

PartyGaming, the Gibraltar based iGaming powerhouse, is understood to have signed at least two major agreements to supply a gaming platform for online poker (and perhaps casino) to whale size Las Vegas land based casinos.

The Vegas casinos that Media Man and Gambling911 insiders hint are in the mix include MGM, Las Vegas Sands, Boyd Gaming and Caesars (former Harrahs Entertainment). It's unlikely a Donald Trump casino is in, as he's just sold at least one of his establishments. Trump is a fan of online casinos, but leaks say he is frustrated by what appears to be slow progress of igaming into mainstream America.

PartyGaming left the US after the UIGEA bill became law and a settlement towards $300 million was made with the DOJ (Department Of Justice).

The firm smartly snatched the opportunity to re-enter the US market if online gambling was ever legalized.

PartyGaming, which has now merged with Bwin, an Austrian based outfit is now ideally positioned to become a major force in the US, having also conducted b2b with other nations government departments, and has many a U.S senator and lawmaker on side, not to mention poker and casino associations and players.

Legalized online gambling in the US is tipped to be just around the corner, as legislators will provide a bill to congress for a vote.

Pro gambling groups and switched on politicians who can see the financial benefits are pushing hard for PartyGaming and a number other iGaming brands to go above board in the United States.

Party enjoys strong presence in the U.S (and Canada and Australia), with its Hollywood titles including Marvel Entertainment tie ins, plus the World Poker Tour brand which it owns and operates, and frequently gets airtime on television broadcasts in much of the western world. It's now or never for PartyGaming, and our leaks tell us its now, no bluff!

Readers, as always, bet with your head, not over it, and have fun.

Michael Bublé: Sydney, Australia Loves You Like Crazy, by Eva Rinaldi - 14th February 2011

I'd been waiting for this night for what must be almost a decade. Finally, my night...our Crazy Love night.

Michael teased me this past Thursday at the presser conducted at the Overseas Passenger Terminal. I could tell then that his concerts in Australia were going to be very special, and tonight - the evening of Valentines Day, I can confirm that they are.

Even though Sydney's Acer Arena holds over 20,000, Michael's gift helps make the audience feel they are getting treated to an intimate experience. Well, he certainly set the scene and warmed me up beautifully for my intimate experience later into the night. On that vein however, I can tell you that his 'Crazy Love' CD does help set the mood.

By my estimation, the jazz sensation is certainly worth $149 plus. Like the greats, you have to experience a live concert to truly appreciate the musical genius.

The multi-talented performer is now close to two million album sales in Australia, with 25 million achieved on a global scale. Yes, us Aussies are raving fans. This tour was Michael's eighth trip to Australia, so the love affair is most definitely a two way street.

My personal favorite number is 'Haven't Met You Yet' which is already five times platinum in Australia.

His songs inspire love, warmth and affection, which was perfect timing for me, having rekindled my relationship with my special man.

Some of Michael's interpretations of other artists that really did it for me on this Valentines evening were Sway, Kissing A Fool, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?, and Heartache Tonight.

The warmth and love vibrated via Michael was experienced by young and old, and I witnessed a young fan who must have only been about 10 years old present Michael with a gift early into the concert performances, and he magically incorporated this into the show, making all of us feel that we received the present too.

He shared his thoughts on love with "My songs have always been about love. Mine and everyone else's. But this time it was a little more extreme, and I dug deeper - way deeper."

I had read earlier in the week that Michael said "I just love getting in front of people. It's so important to be in touch with your audience. They've paid their money, I want them to be entertained. If they want to cry or laugh or dance or sing or yell, they can do whatever they want. My responsibility is just to take them away." Oh yes, you took me away.

Michael, from my heart thank you for helping add some 'Crazy Love' intimacy to my partners and own evening and life. I would also like to publicly thank Buble's publicity team, Dainty Consolidated Entertainment and Live Guide, for helping make me one of the blessed and fortunate few photographers in Sydney to capture your gift close up. My love now has more focus, and its thanks to you. Let the passion, talent and performer bring out the performance in you, and if your single, that's ok too.

Aussie Gambling, Casino And Sports Betting Roundup, by Greg Tingle - 13th February 2011

G'day everyone. The Australian gambling, casino, sports betting and political news keeps coming thick and fast. We've got more of the gambling lovers VS haters, political fun and games and more. Media Man and Gambling911 with your regular Aussie round up...

Australian Sports Want And Need National Gaming - Gambling Regulations...

Down Under's biggest sports have called on the federal government to introduce tough laws to make it easier to target the bookies who seek to corrupt sportsmen with illegal sports-betting. The lobby group representing the country's biggest sports - cricket, AFL, NRL, rugby union, tennis, soccer and netball included - want a new federal law based on Victoria's sports betting act to apply in every state that would also provide a deterrent to those who would try their best to corrupt sports. The Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports met with federal Sports Minister Mark Arbib in the past 48 hours to push along the case for a unified national law. "Existing criminal legislation is inconsistent across Australia and does not deal specifically with corruption in sport," coalition chairman James Sutherland said. "We need a significant deterrent for those who look to corrupt players or influence those who can alter the course of a sporting event," Sutherland said. He said such a law would help the sports "future proof" against corrupters getting a foothold in Australia. "The main feature of this legislation restricts sports betting providers from offering betting services on an event without first reaching agreement with the sport on information sharing and the payment of a product fee. We are also asking for legislation to include an obligation on all betting providers to retain and make available betting data to sports in case they need to investigate suspected corruption and for sport to have the right to stop bet types that encourage corruption in sport." Arbib is set to attend an International Olympic Committee seminar on combating illegal sports betting in Europe later this month. Federal laws would make it easier to have a unified approach but with many of the biggest bookmakers in world sport operating out of India and Pakistan, no offend intended for either country (but facts are facts) international co-operation is arguably more important. The group's executive director, Malcolm Speed, said it was very difficult to unify laws internationally but that should not prevent Australia from establishing a cohesive approach to the issue. "Each state and territory has a different law. You could have a situation like (corrupt former South African captain) Hansie Cronjie where he comes into Perth and is caught in corrupt activities, he moves onto Adelaide and does the same thing but is not caught under South Australia's laws," Speed said. All experts agree, a comprehensive approach and solution is required.

Cricket, NRL, AFL And Others Want Sports Betting Clean Up...

Major sporting groups in Australia, including Cricket Australia and the National Rugby League, have requested the federal government to adopt legislation to prevent incidences of betting-related corruption. It comes the same week as 3 Pakistan cricketers were each banned for a minimum of five years for spot-fixing in a series against England, and following the arrest of an Australian rugby league player for providing false evidence to police over suspicious betting activity. Sports betting is big business in gambling-mad Australia, where an IBISWorld survey last year showed that the market share of sports gambling over five years had nearly doubled from $1.6 billion per annum to $2.9 billion. On Friday, the Coalition for Major Professional and Participation Sports, made up of the Australian Football League, Australian Rugby Union, Cricket Australia, Football Federation Australia, Netball Australia, the NRL and Tennis Australia, said it had prepared a detailed report on sports betting.
The coalition even got help from sports betting providers Betfair and Tabcorp, which may not be as much a case of strange bedfellows as it seems. Nearly all of the sporting groups have betting agency logos on their home pages on the Internet. The sporting groups say having ties with official betting agencies helps them to monitor gambling and to ensure the integrity of their competitions. And, of course, to earn some extra sponsorship money. "There have been very few instances of betting-related corruption in Australian sport," James Sutherland, Cricket Australia chief executive and chairman of the coalition group, said in a statement Friday. "Australian professional sports have an excellent record dealing with these matters. What we are looking for now is help to future-proof the sports from betting-related corruption. Existing criminal legislation is inconsistent across Australia and does not deal specifically with corruption in sport." Sutherland said the group recommended a "nationally consistent legislation on cheating in connection with sports wagering would be a far more appropriate way to address the risk of sports-betting corruption." "We need a significant deterrent for those who look to corrupt players or influence those who can alter the course of a sporting event," Sutherland added.
Cricket was involved in two high-profile cases of players involved in gambling issues in Australia. 3 Sri Lankan players claimed to have been approached on their tour of Australia in 1992, while Australians Shane Warne and Mark Waugh admitted being in contact with an Indian bookmaker in 1994...saying they were giving only pitch and weather information — and were later fined for their actions. The International Cricket Council's anti-corruption tribunal last weekend banned Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir for a minimum of five years for bowling no-balls at predetermined times in a test against England to fix spot-betting markets. Closer to home, rugby league forward Ryan Tandy of the Canterbury Bulldogs was granted bail after being arrested for allegedly providing false evidence during a police investigation into suspicious betting activity. He was stood down by the club.
New South Police are investigating betting irregularities during an NRL match between Canterbury and North Queensland on Aug. 24 last year. There was a betting plunge on the first points of the game being from a penalty, with suspicions raised about Tandy's role after he was penalized for lying on an opponent in front of the goal posts. Tandy could face up to five years in jail if found guilty of providing false evidence to a law enforcement agency during the course of an investigation.
Malcolm Speed, a former ICC president and now executive director of the sports coalition, was reluctant to comment Friday on the sporting group's close association with online betting agencies, only saying that he "didn't think" it would affect the government's opinion when considering the national legislation. Peter Young, Cricket Australia's general manager of public affairs, told The Associated Press that his group is "comfortable" with its association with online gaming houses. On the Cricket Australia website, there is a link to nine online companies referred to as "official betting partners." "These are credible, betting brands," Young said. "We steer them (online visitors) to those brands. If they are going to have a bet, we'd prefer to steer them towards those people." Young said that for most of the last decade, there has been a regulatory requirement that force betting companies to have formal integrity agreements with sport. "It is revenue," Young said of Cricket Australia's connection with the gambling agencies. "We're not trying to create an impression that there is not a commercial element. But what we're trying to do is ensure that nothing can damage our sport." While online betting services logos flash intermittently on the AFL, NRL and Football Federation Australia websites and there is regularly betting updates during cricket TV broadcasts in Australia, there is no such endorsement from Netball Australia, which runs basketball-like sport popular with tens of thousands of women. "Test your gambling knowledge," said the headline on the home page. It then directs the reader to an online survey being conducted by two Australian universities to determine the reader's propensity for gambling. While lottery scratch tickets, bingo and poker-style machine are mentioned, those forms of gambling were all overshadowed in the past few years by gambling on sports, which features prominently in the survey. The connection between Australian sport, sports betting and gambling appears to be stronger than ever and will not decline, at least in not revenue, for sometime yet.

The world is still buzzing about Tasmania's favorite, Devil, David Walsh - the arty fellow who built his financial wealth from the gambling sector. "Wicked" Walsh aka "The Devil" Walsh's new museum is in a gorgeous location, built into the hill overlooking the Derwent River in Hobart. Descending the spiral staircase, you enter a new world. Walsh has been quoted as saying he wants to create a subversive adult Disneyland. Walsh thinks of his museum as a soapbox or megaphone, a vehicle for publicising his vision of the world. He is atheistic to say the least. He preaches that sex and death are the twin poles of our existence. Walsh is especially interested in the evacuation of bodily waste and has even commissioned a machine to emulate the human digestive process and produce its own synthetic faeces. The exhibition is called Monanism, and perhaps this is where the banished sexual appetite has ended up. Walsh may not be for all, but it can be an acquired taste. Our spot survey showed more people are interested to know exactly how he made his money, than find our the fine detains of his art fetish.

World Class Aussie Chef Enjoys Love Hate Relationship With Casinos Down Under...

Sean Connolly had a falling out with 'Sin City' Sydney gaming giant Star City less than a year ago, but he's come back for seconds, returning to the gambling world. The award-winning chef and TV personality is opening a steakhouse and seafood restaurant in a new food precinct being developed by Skycity Auckland, in the land of sheep New Zealand. The 140-seat ground-floor restaurant, with the working name Sean's Grill, will be located in the casino complex's Grand Hotel lobby, opposite celeb chef Peter Gordon's Bellota, and is set for a July opening. "It's my first overseas restaurant and I'm over the moon about it. The story is that he will not be relocating permanently to Kiwi land as his role is more consultant than hands-on owner-chef. "For the next six months while we're setting it up I'll be (in Auckland) full time during the week and home at weekends but once it's up and running I'll be there on a monthly basis, 12 times a year. It will be like Tetsuya in Singapore or Ramsay at Crown." Connolly is looking to recruit some staff from fine-diner Astral...his former Star City restaurant...but is currently not sure be da boss in his Auckland kitchen. "We're going to have a bit of fun with that. I'd like a local chef so we're probably going to set up a competition. We might be doing a TV show around the opening of the restaurant. If it goes ahead we'll do auditions to get the top 3 contenders and do a cook-off." In the meantime, Connolly is also focusing on his role as consultant chef with international catering and hospitality outfit Restaurant Associates, which has Gordon Ramsay, Albert Roux, Michel Roux Jr and Gary Rhodes on its books. Well, once again we see the gambling and good food do mix. If you get a chance, grab a feed at his digs. A good meal is supposed to help make the brain function better, so that may assist your gambling, or then again, it might put you off having a punt. Bet sure to let us know your findings.

Jail For Woman Nabbed Stealing From Boss...

A Launceston woman has been sentenced to 8 months jail for stealing more than $30,000 from her employer. 30 year old Olivia Jane Adams admitted stealing from her employer, Tasmanian Perpetual Trustees for 12 months from July 2008. She was a customer service officer who was responsible for receiving and banking cash and depositing cheques. Adams stole money every day over the period, totalling a cool $34,000, until she was caught. Chief Justice Ewan Crawford said she spent the money on gambling, marijuana and cruising around the state. Adams was sentenced to eight months prison and ordered to pay back the stolen money.

Perth Man Gets Jail For Stealing From Boss; Paying Off Gambling Debts...

In a fishy story, a 53-year-old fellow was sentenced to two and a half years in jail for stealing $156,000 worth of abalone from his employer to pay off his gambling debts. Azumi Pilden pleaded guilty in the Perth District Court to one count of stealing as a servant, relating to stealing 1.2 tonnes of quick frozen abalone from his employer Leeuwin Star, a seafood processing and exporting firm based in Wangara, from June 2006 to March 2008. Judge Anthony Derrick was told Pilden, a courier driver and production coordinator, then on-sold the abalone to seafood company manager Kevin Huynh for a lower price and falsified receipts with his employer's letterhead. Defence lawyer Shane Adam said his client had an entrenched gambling addiction and by 2004 he had accumulated $150,000 in debts with the casino and various loan sharks. He said a loan shark paid off his debts, but after veiled threats were made about paying the money back he entered into the arrangement with Huynh, who approached him with the proposal. Adam said Pilden took advantage of his boss David Leith's absence from the business due to illness to abuse his position of trust. The court was told Pilden continues to gamble on a weekly basis. Pilden and Huynh were charged after a joint covert operation by police and the Department of Fisheries targeting the black market abalone trade. When Pilden was originally charged, it was alleged the amount of abalone stolen was much higher than 1.2 tonnes. Huynh was handed a two year suspended sentence last year for his part in the illegal racket. The court heard Pilden only pleaded guilty after learning Huynh had agreed to help prosecutors in their case against him. Judge Derrick said Pilden's actions had caused significant financial and personal hardship to the owners of Leeuwin Star, as well as having indirect consequences for other businesses that supplied abalone to Leeuwin Star on consignment. He said Pilden viewed the stealing as a "fast track and easier way". Fishy business does not pay.

Problem Gamblers To Get Boot From TAB...

Unhelpable problem gamblers, all 900 of them, should be banned from betting in TAB venues, a gambling watchdog says. Independent Gambling Authority director Robert Chappell said the Government was informally in favour of the idea that the authority be given the power to ban problem gamblers from many or all TAB venues. Under the present system a licensee can ban someone but not stop them from going to the next TAB. Chappell advised the bans would include all betting available in TAB venues, including Keno and sports betting. He said the authority had requested the banning powers after being approached by families of chronic gamblers asking if their loved ones could be stopped. "We expect most of the business would be voluntary barring but also involuntary, so your friends and family could ask for barring if they have concerns for your welfare," Chappell said. "What is missing is if you have a person with a problem in a dozen places; the authority could bar them from all of them. "The form of gambling in a TAB is more dangerous than say lottery at the newsagent. We have been asked to ban people from the TAB but never from a newsagent. You can stand in a TAB and put a bet on every minute." Chappell said it was not possible to say exactly how many people would be affected by the bans. He believed if the existing pokie barring system was extended to TAB outlets and licensee pokie barring was centralised, those numbers would rise from 765 to up to 2000, with up to 900 having some sort of TAB ban. TAB-only bans would be small but many people banned from pokie venues also would include TAB outlets in the orders, he said. The authority had not decided how to enforce the ban but could use identification, fingerprint scanners or by signing in. Treasury is studying the plan, which Chappell endorsed at a Federal Government gambling inquiry. SA Senator Nick Xenophon, co-sponsor of the inquiry with Tasmanian independent MP Andrew Wilkie, has also been briefed on the idea. Banning problem gamblers from SA Lotteries products could not be easily enforced as outlets were easily accessible, Chappell said. There were similar issues with barring from bookmakers and racing clubs. Exactly how bad a persons gambling habit has to be banned is not exactly clear at the time to press.

Australian Sport Fixing Scandal; Problems Not Fixed Yet...

Ex AFL star David Schwarz thinks Ryan Tandy betting saga won't be the last spot-fixing scandal to engulf Australian sport. The reformed gambling addict believes NRL player Tandy is just the first in what could be a long line of sporting stars suspected of accepting money to rig a match. In a wide-ranging interview, Schwarz says sporting associations are treading a fine line by forming ever-closer ties with betting agencies. He also believes players gambling on matches has been rife for years, and that sport betting enjoys far too much exposure. Bulldogs forward Tandy was arrested last week for providing false evidence to a law enforcement agency. Betting was suspended on a Bulldogs-Cowboys NRL match last last season, when agencies reported taking an unusual amount of money on North Queensland to open scoring with a penalty goal. Tandy dropped the ball from the kick-off, then conceded a penalty in the first set of six, but the Cowboys declined an easy shot at goal and scored a try.
Schwarz hopes Tandy's legal battle will act as a deterrent, but he believes the penny is still some way from dropping. "It won't be a deterrent. We've still got a long way before that becomes clear," Schwarz said. "I hope it is a warning, but I fear that this is just the tip of the iceberg. When money's involved, people involved that aren't credible and there's a huge amount of money to exploit, you're always going to have problems." South Sydney and Melbourne Storm recently inked lucrative sponsorship deals with Star City and Crown Casino respectively. And Centrebet has snatched naming rights to Penrith's home ground for the next 5 years. "I just think associations and leagues have got to be very, very careful. If you're going to take money off them you have to suffer the consequences down the track, which may be players, coaches or managers being involved. "Where there's money to be won through gambling, there's going to be scumbags that are going to take advantage. It's very hard, because a lot of clubs can't be viable without the injection of money generated through gambling. Sometimes footy clubs give away too much for the sake of a dollar." The Melbourne Demons legend was consumed by gambling for 15 years. Stay tuned as we continue to probe the connection between Australian sport and gambling on a weekly basis.
