Australia's gambling sector continues to run at red hot levels, with igaming now attracting a great amount of headlines, on par with sports fixing concerns. Increasingly Australian gambling companies are looking to build up their operations, while in many cases do their best to keep away outsiders. Media Man and Gambling911 once again probe gambling's igaming and sports betting sectors...

Australian Gambling Firms Look To Solidify Position; Crackdown On Offshore Sports Betting And iGaming...

One of Australia's top online gambling firms is calling any legislation on exotic gambling options to include a tightening of controls on online poker and online casino games.

Australia's top 4 online gaming websites: Betfair, Centrebet, Sportsbet and Sportingbet yesterday - Thursday got behind new initiatives to red sport of match-fixing. Ambitious, but bold... we know. This follows the lead of international operators also looking to wipe out sports betting rorts such as Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment.

Betfair chief exec Andrew Twaits advised online poker websites, which he thinks cost the industry hundreds of millions of dollars per year, should also be part of new legislation.

"While it is pleasing to see both the federal and state governments taking the integrity of betting in sports seriously and on a united front, the present legislation is clearly not working when it comes to online poker," Twaits told the press.

"Online sports betting in this country turns over $300 million a year, is highly regulated and we pay our taxes, while operators of online poker sites are not, many of which are controlled and run offshore.

"That's the real challenge facing not just the federal and state governments of this country, but governments across the globe.

"It is estimated that the turnover in this and other forms of illegal betting is $125 billion worldwide. That's why as an industry we welcome any tightening of the present legislation in this country of the Victorian Integrated Gambling Act.

"The sooner the rest of the states and territories fall into line the better it will be for everyone."

It's understood that some companies with roots in Australia cover the sports betting and igaming sector as just one or two of other industry sectors they cover, such as entertainment, financial, technology, property and community. Website portal operators have been quick to notice the igaming affiliate sector and some firms also offer media and publicity services to the gambling giants, both in Australia and offshore, with political consultation being a growing part of the online business landscape. Marvel Entertainment and Paramount Pictures have been fast movers to jump into the igaming business, with existing strong brands to leverage, plus a ongoing movie release plan which assist business development and positive news media exposure. Some igaming firms from offshore also continue to ink deals with Australian sports brands like the AFL and NRL.

The call for reform comes as ministers for sport from the federal, state and territory governments meet on the Gold Coast today to address issues of preserving the integrity of sporting events.

Sportingbet Australia chief executive, Michael Sullivan, called yesterday on pro sports under the Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports umbrella to employ full-time supervisors to closely examine betting trends. The AFL employs an integrity officer, and the NRL is expected to soon follow their lead.

The coalition represents the AFL, ARU, NRL, Cricket Australia, FFA, Netball and Tennis.

"The NRL could take a leaf out of the AFL's book on this issue. They seem to be dragging the chain a little," Sullivan told journalists.

"We've seen on the issue arising from the North Queensland investigation that the checks and balances we as an industry already have in place actually do work.

"As for the NRL asking for an industry-wide ban on exotic bets, that's fine, but our figures show that the average bet on the first and last try scorer is just $9.

"That wouldn't buy you a schooner of beer in some pubs in Fremantle.

"Betting on cricket matches in this country isn't a problem. The trouble starts with the sheer weight of money bet on games in India and Pakistan where the industry is either illegal or nowhere near as regulated as you find it here in Australia.

"All we are asking for as a collective is a level playing field."

Major Australian traditional and new media companies including News Limited, Fairfax Media, Network Ten, Nine Entertainment Company, FremantleMedia, and Media Man are continuing to watch the situation closely and often report their finding to some of Australia's leading politicians and sports heads, while gaming giants Bwin.Party, Virgin Games, NextGen Gaming, IGT and PKR continue to monitor Australian developments extremely closely, with some starting to focus more energy into cross promotions, entertainment portals and virtual worlds, until some of the grey areas of sports betting and igaming down under get cleared up.

Punter Brendan Fevola Gambles On Tasmania, by Greg Tingle - 10th June 2011

Tasmania

Arguably Australia's most famous gambler of the modern era, former ALF great, Brendan Fevola, is trying his luck gambling again, but this time in Tasmania, rather than on the mainland of down under. Media Man and Gambling911 voyage across the Tasman to check out the famous gambler's luck... or lack thereof, but we hear he's back on a winning streak...about time sport...

AFL Legend Punter Fev Tries Luck Gambling In Tasmania...

The famous punter is understood to be banned indefinitely from James Packer owned Crown Casino, and a few other hot spots, but that didn't deter Fevola from trying is luck in a land based casino further down under in Tasmania. Yeah, land of the Tassie Devil, well known to the readership thanks to David "Devil" Walsh, gambling and art entrepreneur.

The self confessed alcoholic and gambling nut jumped a plane to Launceston for roughly 24 hours. You have to congratulate Fev for getting more of a handle on work - life balance, and also for his scoring of a few gig at popular radio station, Gold FM. Someone in the Media Man compound was overheard "He's got a good face for radio, but a better face for poker".

Fev was a special guest at the South Launceston Football Club Sportsmen's dinner, and made the most of the opportunity by trying his luck at the Country Club casino for a late night bet or three. Yes sir, it was on for young and old. The old hand's showing the younger players how its done.

Fev is understood to have ruled the roulette table, pulling in roughly $1000 after placing $50 on number 25. "Everything he touched turned to gold" said an insider.

The star wasn't quite so Lucky months ago when seen playing pokies at the Berwick Inn and being pulled up and asked to leave the gaming floor at Crown Casino in March.

He's gone on record that his gambling addictions were on the racing - horses exclusively.

Fevola has eased off the beer and spirits and was just downing energy drinks, so he's making strong progress.

South Launceston Football Club president Ian Goninon advised he was impressed at Fevola's stellar performance, mind you, he's got plenty of media training over the past few years.

"You see him on TV and I didn't know how he would come across, but he was brilliant, just excellent," Goninon said.

Friends, good punting, know your limits and bet with your head, not over it.

Australian Assistance To Problem Gamblers Via Mission Australia...

The ACT Government says its new gambling support service will serve as a 'one-stop-shop' for problem gamblers and their families.

The Government has announced Mission Australia will run the service, providing help for people already struggling with problem gambling as well as running proactive services to help those at risk of developing an addiction.

It is due to be up and running next month.

Economic Development Minister Andrew Barr says it is a unique, nation-leading arrangement.

"Mission Australia will combine their experience in problem gambling services with the many other services they provide including financial counselling, support services for disadvantaged families and youth, support services for relationships, domestic violence, drug and alcohol misuse, mental illness, housing," he said.

Barr says the service will include face-to-face, phone, email and online contact with clients.

He says Mission Australia will also work with the Australian National University, the ACT Gambling and Racing Commission and industry stakeholders to undertake research on the causes and effective treatment of problem gambling.

Barr says it is part of the Government's broader plan to tackle problem gambling.

"That encompass everything from assistance for those who have demonstrated need and perhaps those who we haven't been reaching with previous assistance models, through to some more direct action in relation to the number of poker machines in the Territory, ATM withdrawal limits and the national work around precommitment," he said.

The service is being funded by a 0.6% levy on gambling revenue, an idea initiated by an ACT Greens bill.

Mission Australia's Leonie Green says it will be a diverse program.

"Not only will we be offering financial and gambling counselling services but we will be also providing training for other service providers," she said.

"We'll be able to provide therapeutic services to families and individuals so that they can start looking and addressing all of the other issues. We'll be working in schools raising awareness of gambling."

James Packer Gambling Tycoon: Echo's Of Takeover, by Greg Tingle - 9th June 2011

Crown Casino Star City Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment Australia

Australian gambling news continues to be all the rage with the Tabcorp - Echo Entertainment deal dominating headlines, now with word that Crown Limited's James Packer is pretty bloody interested in a slice of the action. Yep, word is that Packer smells blood and quite an opportunity, but previously has downplayed his interest. Media Man and Gambling911 go shark and whale hunting in this titanic edition of Australian gambling news...

Crown's James Packer Smells Blood At Echo Entertainment - Tabcorp Connection...

Australian casino and media whale James Packer will possibly launch a takeover bid for Echo Entertainment. This has caused the casino operator's shares to spike on Tuesday, its first day as an independently listed company.

Shares in Echo Entertainment, which was last week born from gaming firm Tabcorp, jumped as high as $4.52 after reports that JP had snatched up 4.9% of his competitor Tabcorp.

The curious chess move would give Packer a matching stake in Echo, which owns Sydney's famous and rather controversial Star City casino.

Echo shares dropped back in late trading on Wednesday to finish at $4.36, giving the new kid on the block a market capitalisation of a cool $3 billion.

Tabcorp shares fell 57% to $3.35 Wednesday, a flow on effect from the removal of the company's casino assets. We told you there's money in casino products and services Casino Jack.

Now we learn that in a note to clients last Friday, Merrill Lynch analyst Nathan Gee named Packer's Crown group as the most likely company to mount a takeover bid for Echo, but advised there was unlikely to be any action until next year.

Gee estimated a Crown takeover would unlock $600 million worth of value in the combined group, comprised of cost savings and high-rolling VIP aka "whale" revenue.

But he said any move would be unlikely before Echo rolls out its $960 million Star City redevelopment, due to be finished by the end of the year or early next year.

Holding off on a takeover bid would enable Crown to see whether the extra investment in Star City had paid off and avoid distracting casino management, he said.

"The Star relaunch in late 2011 will be a critical time for Echo management, so we think it makes sense for bidders to allow management to concentrate its efforts on maximising the impact of the relaunch, rather than being distracted by corporate activity," he said.

Packer does not appear among Echo's top 20 shareholders, filed by the company with the stock exchange yesterday.

The top three shareholders are nominee companies, holding shares on behalf of unidentified investors.

NAB subsidiary National Nominees has emerged as Echo's No.1 shareholder with 17.9% of the company.

The bank's stake in Tabcorp has been hovering around the substantial shareholder threshold of 5 per cent for months.

Since January, it has filed 31 substantial shareholder notices with the ASX as its stake rose and fell above and below 5%.

Companies controlled by HSBC and JPMorgan are Echo's second and third-largest shareholders.

James Packer: Online Catch Of The Day Update...

Fresh from closing one of the biggest e-commerce deals in Australian history, the Melbourne brothers behind a daily deals website say they will use the backing of James Packer and other investors to launch two new sites. Just don't mention the impending lawsuit, which could see the Australian company and its new investors embroiled in a grisly court case with the US giant of the daily deals industry, Groupon. Gabby and Hezi Leibovich today confirmed they had sold a 40 per cent stake of their online retail business Catch Of The Day to a consortium of leading Australian businessmen - including Packer of Consolidated Press Holdings, Andrew Bassat of Seek and Glenn Poswell of Gannet Capital - and New York-based investment manger Tiger Global Management. The deal nets the brothers $80 million, which they say they will use to launch two new sites: one in the grocery space and one in the apparel fashion space. The business already operates two sites: Scoopon.com.au, which lists a daily deal which a certain number of users must commit to before it goes live, and Catchoftheday.com.au, which lists items for purchase at low prices. Gabby Leibovich told the press that a chunk of the $80 million received in the much-anticipated deal was in "big suitcases at my grandmother's house". Packer said he was "excited" to align with the "market leader in the online daily deals sector in Australia". However, Leibovich was less willing to comment on impending court cases brought by Groupon, the American giant that has launched legal action against the brothers. The legal action - launched both here and in the US - seeks to enable Groupon to get the Groupon.com.au domain name from the brothers, who purchased it before Groupon did, forcing Groupon to launch under the name Stardeals.com.au in Australia. When asked about the legal battle that could test the laws over cyber-squatting, Leibovich declined to comment. "Let's leave it" he said.

Star City Casino Plays Free Music Card; Accusers Say Turns Fans Into Punters...

A free music night held at Star City Casino in 'Sin City' Sydney has aroused suspicions from some quarters. The Independent Senator Nick Xenophon says it's an attempt to get young music fans addicted to gambling. He's called for the new venue, the Rock Lily to be moved away from the casino to protect young people. But the casino says the free night is filling an important void in the live music scene and shouldn't be stopped. The presser included: showcase the best Australian music acts plus a number of international performers. It also boasts the largest selection of tequila in Australia, plus an inviting, warm decor which encourages you to "come as you are". So far those top Aussie artists have included Aria award winner Washington and the festival favourite Art vs Science. The gigs held from Wednesday to Sunday are free. John Barwick from Hell City Glamours was interviewed...

"It was actually very awesome. Around 400 people - it was packed. Once there's a couple of hundred people in the place it was pretty kickin'."

"You've got to do the same thing everybody else does who's going there to gamble. You know you've got to go and get your ID checked. You go up the escalators. You've got to walk through the blackjack or backgammon or whatever they hell they're betting on these days. It's a casino. It's definitely a casino".

Victorian Sports Club Gets Pokies Green Light...

Victoria's gaming regulator will allow a Bendigo club to install more poker machines. The Kangaroo Flat Sports Club currently has 48 one armed bandits and the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation has approved the lifting of that number to 60. Bendigo council has previously endorsed the move.

Media Man Online Casino Top Pick: Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment...

PartyCasino.com keep the Australian's happy with Robin Hood Mini (Russell Crowe connection) and the oldie but goodie, Goanna Gold. No Underbelly or Kerry Packer themed slots as yet, but Thor, Rambo and interestingly, The Terminator, all enjoyed a spike with Australian and New Zealander players. Similar results in Canada. Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment keep attempting to get back into the U.S, and are watching the online space in the Asia Pacific region very closely, where Centrebet, Sporting Bet and Tabcorp continue to shake things up. Party remains the top online casino brand for Hollywood themed slot games down under.

Australian Sports Codes Head Want Urgent Action On Online Betting...

Down under's top sporting bodies are demanding much stronger laws to safeguard the integrity of their codes against betting corruption, including veto power over "exotic" in-play bets and jail terms for match fixers. The proposals from the Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports, which includes the AFL and NRL, will be included in proposals Sports Minister Mark Arbib takes to a meeting tomorrow of Australia's sports ministers on the Gold Coast. "There has been a proliferation in terms of sports betting. We need to ensure that government regulation keeps up with the changes that are taking place," Arbib said. The working group report and recommendations come a week after the NRL announced a crackdown on sports betting and follow Communications Minister Stephen Conroy's announcement that the promotion of betting odds during the broadcast of sporting events would be phased out by June next year.

Media Man Movie News Update: ‘Fast Five’, ‘Thor’, ‘Pirates 4′, and ‘The Hangover Part II’ - 5th June 2011

Profiles

Hollywood Movies Movie Reviews Marvel Entertainment Marvel Comics Thor Disney Games

The name of the game is Show Business - how is the business end of the show going, or in this case, how is the movie grossing? That's what the bean counters really want to know.

Media Man with the assistance of Google, AP, Wires, Box Office Mojo, News Corp and IMDB can now report the following..

It gets lost sometimes on just how movies do after their release just because they are not number one at the box office for six consecutive weeks, so here is a quick update on the first summer blockbusters and their total box office returns thus far as of Friday, June 3.

Fast Five debuted in the US on April 29, 2010 to a spectacular $86 million opening weekend. The film surpassed expectations in a big way even after its huge release. The film now stands at nearly $200 million domestically and $356 million internationally for a combined total of $556 million world wide. Early estimates of total cumulative box office numbers for the fifth film in this franchise were between $400 and $500 million.

Thor is now up to $420 million world wide ($166 million of which is domestic) after a $66 million first weekend after releasing on May 6 in the US.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is well on its way to doing $1 billion at the box office as the film has already surpassed $714 million world wide despite a weak domestic performance of only $177 million after a $90 million opening weekend which began May 20th. This movie still has its sea legs and will continue to rack up theatrical revenue in a huge way for another two weeks or so.

The Hangover Part II is perhaps the biggest surprise this summer as it has tallied over $225 million worldwide since its May 26 US launch. Last week, the movie debuted to a $85 million 3-day weekend aided by the memorial day holiday and holds numerous records for R-rated comedy openings of all-time. The Hangover Part II‘s domestic total now stands at $165 million.

Kung Fu Panda 2 is performing well below expectations, and this is expected to continue throughout the movie’s run despite positive reviews. The film has grossed $168 million world wide after its first 9 days in release, and only $82 million of that is domestic. Early sequels in hit franchises nowadays are expected to perform better than the first, and right now Kung Fu Panda 2 is tracking 10% below its predecessor domestically in addition to a decreased foreign box office percentage from the first as well.

Readers, what flicks did you prefer and why?

What movies would you like to see adapted into games and other branded merchandise?

Next-Gen Internet Addresses: Generic, Gaming, Adult, by Greg Tingle - 9th June 2011

The internet landscape keeps evolving at a rapid pace in most sectors of internet b2, be it gambling, adult, tourism, financial, entertainment or legal. Readers may recall that over the past 12 months Media Man and Gambling911 have probed the internet - IP space, with some doubting our findings re internet addresses running out. Only now has further concrete prove emerged that we were right, and the doubting thomas' was wrong. Welcome to the Next Generation...

Less than 48 hours ago a worldwide test got under way re the next wave of Internet addresses designed to replace the diminishing pool of some 4.3 billion unique identifiers in the original system.

Hundreds of companies, groups and institutions around the world are taking part in "World IPv6 Day," including Internet giants such as Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Yahoo! Media Man and Gambling911 decided to jump on the bandwagon also, being the pro active members of the internet portal and web publishing community that they are.

Say G'day to Internet Protocol version 6 - the new system of unique identifying numbers for websites, computers and other Internet-connected whatevers and is slowly but surly replacing the original addressing system, IPv4, which is nearing exhaustion. Yeah, the old system we tipped you off on a few times over the past 12 months.

IPv6 provides more than 4 billion times more addresses than IPv4.

The number of available IPv4 addresses will run out later this year and the transition across to IPv6 is needed to keep pace with the unprecedented growth in Internet use around the world.

American networking company Cisco forecast in a report released this month that the number of devices connected to the Internet will top more than 15 billion by the year 2015 - that's more than double the world's population.

Web users will be largely clueless to the switch over to IPv6 since an IP address such as 74.125.71.103, for example, will still appear in the address bar as google.com. Insiders and our loyal readership will of course not be as clueless as the average Joe and Jan Doe.

Google, which is enabling IPv6 on Google Search, Gmail, YouTube and other services, said "the vast majority (99.95%) of people will be able to access services without interruption" during the IPv6 test, which began at 0000 GMT Wednesday went for approximately 24 hours.

"Either they'll connect over IPv6, or their systems will successfully fall back to IPv4," Google network engineer Lorenzo Colitti blogged.

Colitti estimated that 0.05% of systems may fail to fall back to IPv4, making Google, Facebook, Yahoo!, Bing and other participating websites "slow or unresponsive."
Facebook network engineer Donn Lee said World IPv6 Day "will enable the industry to gain insights about potential IPv6 issues, find solutions, and accelerate global adoption of IPv6."

It can now be revealed that some Media Man internet connected computers did slow down over the past hours.

Lee estimated that 99.97% of Facebook users would not be affected by the test.

The change to IPv6 mainly impacts Internet service providers, websites and network operators who have to make sure their systems can handle the new online addresses and properly route traffic.

Leaks indicate that igaming giants Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment, Virgin Games, PKR, Playtech and Microgaming marketing and network operations heads were all monitoring the situation closely, with the stakes being so high in and around the igaming sector.

A Media Man insider leaked "In many cases with igaming giants, if one or two of their websites go down, even for a short duration, the effected company can loose hundreds of thousands of dollars, as the potential customer - player will find another website to satisfy their desires. If you lose traffic, eyeballs, you loose customers and money. This is one reason it also pays to have backup websites, sometimes on numerous servers".

The non-profit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which manages the technical architecture of the internet, allocated the last batches of IPv4 numbers in February.

ICANN has been calling for a switch to IPv6 for years but many websites and Internet service providers have been clutching onto the old standard for dear life.

Former ICANN chairman Vint Cerf, a Google vice president who is widely considered a "founding father" of the Internet, has advised he and numerous other engineers did not imagine there would be a need for more addresses when they created the IPv4 protocol way back in 1977, before some of the readership was born or even an idea in mum and dad's head.

"I thought it was an experiment and I thought that 4.3 billion would be enough to do an experiment," Cerf told the press. "Who the hell knew how much address space we needed?"

In the meantime some web publishing companies and internet entrepreneurs have decided to test the market and let it be know they are open to selling some high quality domain names and / or web portals for the right price, with Sedo and Google being a few of the web giants tipped off, hoping to attract some win - wins from the current situation.

Punters, er readers, stay glued to Media Man and Gambling911 reports for more "can't miss" information on the world wide web.

Let's Hear It For The Girls - $8 Million Worth Of Winners In One Month On PartyCasino.com

The Big One Hit For Over $4.3 Million

Gibraltar – 7th June 2011 -- PartyCasino.com the world’s largest online casino, would like to congratulate a female customer, who wishes to remain anonymous, for hitting ‘The Big One’ on Melon Madness, scooping a life changing $4,445,947.40!

Remarkably, this lucky lady had only been a customer for nine days when she hit the largest progressive online jackpot in the industry. She becomes the second woman in a matter of weeks to hit a life changing jackpot after Cameeq8 won $1,986,161.61 through the Gold Mega Jackpot playing SuperStar in early May. In total, over $8 million in big jackpots were won by women alone during the month of May!

After hitting ‘The Big One’ for over $4.3 million on the 23rd May the latest big winner at the world’s largest online casino instantly went on a two week break to help the news to sink in. "I still don't feel like a millionaire," she said. “It will take a while for me to really understand how much I won. My life has already changed as I do not have to worry about my mortgage or wonder how I will pay off my big bills. I can go and purchase something without thinking of where the money will come from!"

"I love Melon Madness and decided to splurge a little as I won $6,100 a few hours prior. When I say spurge I mean play the 30 lines at $0.50. I managed to hit the colossal wheel three times and each time I won approximately $9-$10. When I hit the fourth colossal wheel, I said to myself, just land on the $60,000 colour please and shut my eyes as I was just hoping to win that amount! I opened my eyes just as the wheel was about to stop and it landed on $4.3 million! I looked at the computer screen and could not believe the winnings and put left hand to my head and softly said I won big. I did not believe I won that amount. To this day I still don’t believe it," she added.

24 hours before this huge win, another female customer won big on PartyCasino.com Rebecca350 took down over $500k while another lucky female customer won over $800k days before.

A PartyCasino.com spokesman said: "We haven’t seen a winning streak of this magnitude from female players on our site before, the men haven’t had a look in. Women simply won everything in the last month and have scooped over $8 million in big jackpots. We are wondering whether this run is ever going to stop!"

PartyCasino.com has the most frequent game launches in the industry and offers over 160 games, including over 100 slots. PartyCasino.com pays out easily over $10 million EVERY DAY to players. The Big One is structured as a five tiered pool. The highest tier - Colossal Cash - seeds at $1.5 million, the biggest online jackpot seed in the industry and currently stands at over $1.6 million.

WSOP Monday: Bracelets Aplenty - 6th June 2011

Media Man Profiles

Poker Online Poker World Series of Poker Las Vegas American Gaming United States

There was no shortage of action at the 2011 World Series of Poker (WSOP) on Monday, as three bracelets were clinched in three entirely different events. To be fair, the final days of two of the tournaments were actually started on Sunday, but the bracelets were won after the clock struck midnight, so we’re going to put them in the books for Monday.

Monday was but a half hour old when the day’s first bracelet was claimed by 29-year old professional poker player Harrison Wilder, formerly of Beaverton, Oregon, now living in Las Vegas. Harrison took down Event #6, the $1,500 Limit Hold’em event, winning $205,065 in the process.

He was in a dominating position entering heads-up play against Thomas Jamieson, holding more than a 2-to-1 chip advantage. On the final hand, Jamieson was almost down to the felt before the cards were even dealt, so he ended up all-in pre-flop. His K-T had a decent chance against Wilder’s A-2, especially once the flop came down J-Q-3, giving Jamieson an open-ended straight draw in addition to his two live cards, but he couldn’t hit any of the multitude of outs on the turn or river.

Wilder’s story is an interesting one. Parents are not generally thrilled when their offspring declare that they are going to take a shot at being a professional poker player, but this wasn’t the case for Wilder. He was struggling at the University of Oregon, but had taken up an interest in poker, so his parents, of all people, told him he should drop out of school and take up poker full time. He did just that, eventually becoming good enough to support himself by playing online. Since Black Friday, he has moved from Oregon to Las Vegas and, get this, his parents went with him.

This was Harrison Wilder’s first ever WSOP bracelet.

Less than an hour after Wilder won Event #6, Amir Lehavot won Event #7, the $10,000 Pot-Limit Hold’em Championship. This was also the first WSOP victory for the native Israeli now living in Florida.

Lehavot was third in chips entering the final table, but by the time he was heads-up with Jarred Solomon, who started the final table as the chip leader, he had a huge lead, 5.415 million to 2.160 million. Solomon barely got any closer and eventually found himself needing to just find a hand with which to run. He made his move with A-J, but unfortunately was looked up by Lehavot with A-Q. The flop of Q-Q-T looked really bad for Solomon, but it actually gave him four outs to the straight instead of the three Jacks that he had to start the hand, so it wasn’t all bad. Another Ten on the turn gave Lehavot a full house, though, and the tournament was over.

For the win, Lehavot took home $573,456. He is a former software developer who is now a semi-professional poker player. Lehavot founded the poker training site PokerWit.com.

The final bracelet of the day went to Matt Perrins, who won Event #9, $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball. The young Brit had never played the game before the tournament started. In fact, his only exposure to it came in the form of about 30-minutes worth of YouTube videos that he watched to learn the basics. Knowing his competition obviously had more experience, he used aggression try to even the playing field. Apparently, it worked, as Perrins is now $102,105 richer and can celebrate with his best friend, Jake Cody, who won the $25,000 Heads-Up Championship.

On the final hand, Chris Bjorin called Perrins’ all-in and both players elected to draw one card. Before the draw, Perrins showed 8-6-5-3, leading Bjorin’s T-7-6-3. Bjorin requested that Perrins draw first so he knew what he had to beat, but as it turned out, it wouldn’t matter, as Perrins drew a 2, giving him an unbeatable hand.

On Tuesday, Event #8, one of the popular $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em events, will be in its fourth day (technically Day 3, as the first day was split into two flights), as the original field of 4,178 continues to narrow. The final table is scheduled for Wednesday. Event #10, $1,500 Six-Handed No-Limit Hold’em, will be in its second day, also with the final table scheduled for Wednesday. The same can be said for Event #11, the $10,000 Omaha Hi-Lo Split-8 or Better Championship. (Credit: Poker News Daily)
