We will have to wait until the conclusion of the end of next season to see what happens with the TV contract. Free-to-air rights holder, Network Nine, has committed to pay more for the content, while Network Ten and Channel Seven have advised they are in the running to make bids to attempt to snatch the TV rights offerings. Tax is always a big thing for business. A 1.5 per cent turnover tax on wagering, is tipped to increase NRL revenue by as much as $20 mill. Sweet money if you can get it. This would facilitate the NRL to grab higher product fees, further increase annual club grants and thus reduce clubs' dependence on 'one armed bandits'. The news is not all good for the clubs. Friday's High Court decision granting Northern Territory corporate bookmakers and Betfair leave to appeal against a Federal Court decision upholding the turnover tax may play on the minds of the Sydney NRL club powers that be. It does't mean the High Court will reverse the Federal Court decision that gives legitimacy to product fees being based on the existing gross profit model, however NRL clubs would have preferred the High Court did not grant leave to appeal. The federal government's agenda to address problem gambling is set out in a memorandum to the presidents of licensed clubs on March 3 we understand. The Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, favours a pre-commitment scheme where "We use technology to give people a tool, at the beginning of a gambling session, to think about how much they want to spend, set limits and stick to them. Under the model recommended by the Productivity Commission, players can set the limit as high or low as they like and players could choose no limit at all if they prefer." In a letter to the minister on March 9, the general manager of St George Leagues Club, Danny Robinson, set out his board's concerns. "This club cannot afford to spend the estimated costs of $6 million on the required technology to implement such a system. The expected reduction in revenue for this club would be $14 million per year which, together with the costs associated with the implementation of mandatory pre-commitment, would cause this club to close. Closure of this famous club would result in the loss of jobs for hundreds of workers and the loss of facilities enjoyed by over 30,000 members. The club's current contribution of over $4 million per year for sport and sporting facilities would be lost to the community … The club's annual contribution of $300,000 to local hospitals and children with special needs would also be lost." Adelaide Casino Switches Off Outdoor Pokies...
The Adelaide Casino has turned off poker machines which are installed in its outdoor smoking area, due to some people power pressure. The gaming section was opened last week and has 20 outside poker machines enabling people to gamble while smoking. Some MPs expressed concerns that casino operator SkyCity was trying to exploit a loophole in South Australia's smoking laws, pointing out pubs could not install outdoor pokies. SA Premier Mike Rann said the move was not a good look for the Adelaide Casino. "What they've done looks to most people like trying to get round the rules," he said. "Now if it's legal and there's a loophole then we should look at closing that loophole. "I would like to see the casino do the right thing and I think at the moment what they've done is the wrong thing." SA Gambling Minister Bernard Finnigan has asked gambling control authorities to prepare a report for him. "I've asked the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner for a full report on the matter as to what the current regulations are," he said. "We're certainly committed to making sure that we have smoke-free gambling areas in the casino and elsewhere." Independent Senator Nick Xenophon said SkyCity Casino was exploiting a loophole in legislation by putting machines outside. "We know from the research there's a clear link between gambling and smoking, particularly with poker machines," he said. "Now it can continue, people playing, because they don't go out to get a cigarette break. "It clearly is a breach of the spirit of the legislation. It's a loophole and the Government needs to act now." Independent MLC John Darley also said he would demand the Government act. In a statement, casino general manager David Christian said authorities were notified last December the casino would be putting machines in the area, which was licenced for gambling decades ago.

An ex Melbourne lawyer who stole from clients to pay for a gambling addiction, has been ordered to pay $637,000 to the Legal Services Board for breach of trust. Gabriel Werden lost his right to practice law and was sentenced to almost six years in prison in 2006. He was convicted of a string of theft charges and obtaining financial advantage by deception, after admitting he stole $1.1 million from nine clients. Werden claimed he was being threatened by loan sharks, who were helping to pay for his gambling addiction at Crown Casino. The Victorian Supreme Court this morning ordered Werden to pay the Legal Services Board $637,000 for breach of trust.

Australian NRL Clubs Ask Govt Assistance, by Greg Tingle - 17th March 2011
G'day sports nuts, punters, legal eagles, government officials...one and all. The fallout from the Australian governments proposed gaming (pokie) law changes continue, with NRL clubs asking the Government to make up the shortfall, since they are certain they will be out of pocked if the proposed changes go ahead. Problem is, with all the waste and lots of financial mismanagement, the Aussie government doesn't have much money to hand out to anyone, and clubs are not exactly the darling of 'Big Brother' at the moment. Media Man and Gambling911 crash tackle the situation...
The National Rugby League clubs in 'Sin City' Sydney have a list of requests (getting closer to demands we hear) to offset the effect on their takings, should the Aussie government implement proposals like 'smart cards' onto 'one armed bandits' (slots aka pokies).
The licensed clubs which are behind the footy clubs estimate the dip in revenue and cost of implementing the changes in attempt to reduce problem gambling will force them to cease many community support initiatives, like nurturing up and coming junior players, helping out aged care, schools and the like. It's the flow on effect.
Should the federal government keep at these gaming reforms, clubs reckon a couple of things will assist them on the bean counter side of things...

The NSW state election will be on March 26 and Labor is set to go down for the count in spectacular fashion.
The Coalition (Liberals and Nationals) have inked a memorandum of understanding with Sydney's whale size licensed clubs giving them tax relief on pokies, snatching St George Leagues Club (The Dragons) $800,000. Clubs with larger gambling revenue (Penrith Panthers and Canterbury Bulldogs), will also get more of the action.
St George's annual contribution to football is $3 million: $2.7 million is put aside to the NRL team and $300,000 to the club's junior representative teams.
Media deals can also be a big part of the financial future of clubs. The clubs are seeking a billion-dollar TV rights deal. This would effectively raise the NRL's revenue from broadcasting by a massive 50%, and would be expected to double the NRL's annual grant to its 16 clubs, currently at $3.5 million.
We will have to wait until the conclusion of the end of next season to see what happens with the TV contract. Free-to-air rights holder, Network Nine, has committed to pay more for the content, while Network Ten and Channel Seven have advised they are in the running to make bids to attempt to snatch the TV rights offerings.
Tax is always a big thing for business. A 1.5 per cent turnover tax on wagering, is tipped to increase NRL revenue by as much as $20 mill. Sweet money if you can get it. This would facilitate the NRL to grab higher product fees, further increase annual club grants and thus reduce clubs' dependence on 'one armed bandits'.
The news is not all good for the clubs. Friday's High Court decision granting Northern Territory corporate bookmakers and Betfair leave to appeal against a Federal Court decision upholding the turnover tax may play on the minds of the Sydney NRL club powers that be.
It does't mean the High Court will reverse the Federal Court decision that gives legitimacy to product fees being based on the existing gross profit model, however NRL clubs would have preferred the High Court did not grant leave to appeal.
The federal government's agenda to address problem gambling is set out in a memorandum to the presidents of licensed clubs on March 3 we understand.
The Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, favours a pre-commitment scheme where "We use technology to give people a tool, at the beginning of a gambling session, to think about how much they want to spend, set limits and stick to them. Under the model recommended by the Productivity Commission, players can set the limit as high or low as they like and players could choose no limit at all if they prefer."
In a letter to the minister on March 9, the general manager of St George Leagues Club, Danny Robinson, set out his board's concerns.
"This club cannot afford to spend the estimated costs of $6 million on the required technology to implement such a system. The expected reduction in revenue for this club would be $14 million per year which, together with the costs associated with the implementation of mandatory pre-commitment, would cause this club to close. Closure of this famous club would result in the loss of jobs for hundreds of workers and the loss of facilities enjoyed by over 30,000 members. The club's current contribution of over $4 million per year for sport and sporting facilities would be lost to the community … The club's annual contribution of $300,000 to local hospitals and children with special needs would also be lost."
Robinson stages the flow on effects would occur without guarantee a pokie pre-commitment system would work. The system hasn't worked well in other countries with many experts, private and government saying the system is a failure, and a waste of time and money. Gamblers will continue to gamble, especially problem gamblers, with lots of loop holes - fake ID, makes cards, club hopping, removing fingerprints and all manner of other cleaver tactics, in attempt to outsmart 'Big Brother'.

The internet can be a wonderful place for learning, fun, relationships and even business development, but there's are a number of important things to be aware of.
Australian based media agent, gaming and political commentator Greg Tingle is all too aware of the good, the bad and the ugly of the internet.
Most people know Greg as a publicist, media agent and internet portal developer. A Media Man spokesperson said 'We are proud to do our modest little bit to help make people aware of some of societies dangers. Bulling, online and offline are huge problems in society. We experienced a small amount of bullying at school, and have have also received some cyber bulling on the internet. The internet bullying stems from us reporting a criminal to the Australian Federal Police and InterPol many years ago, after we discovered an apparent businessperson was not so much as a businessperson, but a criminal involved in ID theft, I.P trademark infringements, possession of stolen property, credit card skimming, defamation, cyber stalking, cyber squatting, brand hijacking and more. The internet can be a great place to learn and conduct business, but we recommend that some research be done on individuals before doing business with them, meeting or otherwise. Parent and guardian supervision is also a good idea for persons under the age of 18. Even adults and smart business can be fooled from internet scams and other net nasties, so that shows just how important it is that kids get supervision. Minors should not have access to adult material like pornography or play for money games. Adults can of course make their own minds up as to if they - themselves wish to view adult material or gambling websites. It's been proven that internet filters do not work 100%. In the school playground, teachers can't be everywhere at once either. If something is going on that shouldn't be, we recommend you tell a trusted friend and a law enforcement agency, like the NSW or Australian Federal Police for example. We haven't agreed with every single message out of the ACMA over the years, but we sure agree with this one".

‘Stand up and speak out against cyberbullying’ — ACMA supports National Day Against Bullying and Violence
The role of the bystander, the person who witnesses bullying behaviour, is the key focus for tomorrow’s National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence.
‘Bullying is not just an individual issue — peers, parents and schools have a positive and practical part to play – indeed, a role to discharge - in ending bullying and finding solutions,’ said Australian Communications and Media Authority Chairman, Chris Chapman.
The ACMA’s key messages for a bystander witnessing cyberbullying are:
-Don’t just stand by. Speak out!
-Protect and support your friends
-Tell a trusted adult
To mark the ‘Bullying No Way!’ day, the ACMA is providing a suite of lesson plans for teachers across Australia on how to prevent and manage cyberbullying, as well as staging a National Cybersmart Hero event created to tackle cyberbullying.
Cybersmart Hero is a one-hour, online in-school activity for students in grade five and six that addresses the responsibilities of the people in the best position to influence cyberbullying —the bystander. The lesson plans bring the discussion into the open and encourage students to tell their parents or teachers.
‘Confident bystanders are important because bullies like an audience –whether it’s online or in the school yard - but they are most likely to stop when peers show disapproval,’ said Mr Chapman. ‘With bullying affecting nearly a third of Year Four to Nine students, encouraging young people to report bullying and stand up for their friends should be a potent peer to peer deterrent.’

Casino News Media: Merger Between bwin and PartyGaming Planned to Complete on 31 March 2011
March 15, 2011 - Merger Plan Requirements Now Met in Austria
Following the almost unanimous approval of the merger at the extraordinary general meetings of both bwin Interactive Entertainment AG (bwin) and PartyGaming Plc.
(PartyGaming) on 28 January 2011, the proposed merger was formally entered into the companies' register by the Vienna Commercial Court on 15 March 2011. Subject to the formal approval from the supreme court in Gibraltar, the merger is expected to complete on 31 March 2011.
Share trading on the stock exchange
bwin shares (ISIN AT0000767553) will cease trading on the Vienna Stock Exchange at close of business on 25 March 2011. For administrative reasons, trading in bwin shares on the Vienna Stock Exchange must be suspended for three days prior to completion and also on the day of completion itself (31 March 2011). On 1 April 2011, existing bwin shareholders will receive 12.23 bwin.party depositary interests (ISIN GI000A0MV757) for each bwin share free of charge. These depository interests can then be traded on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol BPTY.L.
The exchange ratio of 12.23 bwin.party depositary interests for each bwin share will result in so-called 'fractional entitlements', rights to fractions of bwin.party depositary interests that cannot be traded on the London Stock Exchange. In accordance with the terms of the merger, these entitlements will be disposed of, and the proceeds of sale credited to the original beneficiaries (former bwin shareholders) in a process that may take up to two weeks. The disposal of fractional entitlements is also without cost to bwin shareholders.
Anti-trust approvals received
Following the approval of the merger in Germany by the Federal Cartel Office and in Austria by the Federal Competition Authority, bwin has now also received anti-trust approval from the relevant authorities in Romania.
Dividend
The new bwin.party depositary interests will carry a dividend entitlement with effect from 1 January 2010. The company's dividend policy will be determined by the new board of bwin.party digital entertainment plc over the next few months.

An amateur photographer snapped his not so smartphone - iphone at Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson at a Crown Casino restaurant Saturday with alarming results, bringing minds back to Russell Crowe's and Naomi Campbell's bad phone days.

Amateur Photographer Puts Jeremy Clarkson's Anger Into Top Gear At Crown Casino...
Folks, its been a while since we had a bit of odd news from Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia, but wait no longer.
Readers will recall the 'Ferrari Thief Man', the 'Casino Battle Royal' and 'Grease Trap Man', but now we have 'Crown's Amateur Pap Man Angers Clarkson Into Top Gear'.
Melbourne racing car enthusiast Michael Garner claims the British TV star shirt-fronted him during a heated Crown Casino restaurant stand-off on Saturday night.
Clarkson's engine overheated when Garner used his smartphone to take some pictures of the star having a bite at a Melbourne restaurant located in James Packer's Crown Casino.
The otherwise popular, but ever controversial Clarkson was dining with colleagues including co-star James May and new Top Gear Australia host Shane 'Kenny' Jacobson at Crown's Guiseppe Arnaldo & Sons.
Super fan Garner, sitting nearby, advised he took one happy snap, which didn't work, and then snapped a second.
"We weren't intrusive. I didn't walk up to him. He was 8ft away, he wasn't close by," Garner told 3AW yesterday.
"He's got out of his seat, stormed over and shirt-fronted me."
A heated up Clarkson snatched the iphone and threw it to a colleague and Garner said he thought the TV star might king hit him.
"In some ways, yes, I thought it could be on," he said.
Jacobson stepped in to calm the situation, apologising to Garner and saying that Clarkson had had a bad day.
"(Clarkson) didn't apologise at all, which I thought was pretty unfair," Garner said.
A Top Gear spokeswoman said the crew had been having a private dinner and their privacy was invaded, but she said the situation had been amicably resolved.
It's understood that Clarkson, Jacobsen nor Garner gambled on the evening in question.

It was Fawcett who stalked out Australian cricket legend and celebrity businessman, Shane Warne, when he was 'hanging and banging' with UK babe Liz 'Hurley' Burley, who he lured down under to Australia after a well publicized kiss (pash) a few months ago. Fawcett has gone on record many times that his style of photography is about 'The Money Shot', but one can be forgiven for confusing the styles of photography money shots between himself and the Sydney based Eva Rinaldi, who hasn't photographed poker or casino stars yet, but is in line for the Royal's Price William. She was also recently spotted at the Future Music Festival where the Mazda2 Flamingo stage had a casino theme even sporting a likeness from the Golden Nugget casino in Las Vegas.

Professor of psychology Alex Blaszczynski says internet sports betting is changing the face of problem gamblers seeking help. He says the image of someone sitting at the pokies for hours on end is being replaced by young men gambling on the net. "Today we are seeing many young men who are losing large sums of money from betting on sports over the internet," he said. "They can literally lose a fortune without leaving the comfort of their own home." Figures released by the University of Sydney's gambling clinics show a 70 per cent increase in internet sports betting clients from 2008-9 to 2010-11. "With more and more people gaining access to higher internet speeds and wireless internet via their smart phones, you can gamble anytime and anywhere," Professor Blaszczynski said. He says with football season about to start, he expects an increase in people seeking help for problem gambling on the net. Clinical psychologist Christopher Hunt says increased promotion of gambling through sports media was a concern. "It's difficult to watch most kinds of sporting matches these days without being made aware of the prices that various outlets are giving for bets," he said. Hockey said the long-term unemployed and those on disability pensions should be case managed by Centrelink. "We have to meet head-on the challenge of growing welfare dependency," he told ABC Radio yesterday. Hockey also said people with drug and gambling problems should have their welfare payments quarantined. But Australian Council of Social Service's chief executive Cassandra Goldie said it was the wrong approach. "There is still very little evidence to say that compulsory income management actually makes a difference," she said. Tasmania: Greens Party Keen To See Community Take On Casinos...
The Tasmanian Greens will push for poker machines in the Federal Group's casinos to be subject to the community support levy, like those in other gaming venues. Leader Nick McKim told Parliament that Tasmanians lost $214 million on poker machines last year. He said applying the community support tax to casino poker machines would raise $2.6 million a year which could be spent on programs to treat gambling addicts. McKim denied his plan would unfairly disadvantage the Federal Group which runs the state's casinos. "Everyone has to pay their way in these tough times," he said. "Secondly Federal Hotels Group have had a very good ride for a very long, long period of time from the Tasmanian Government, and from the Tasmanian people, and it is time as the good corporate citizens they aspire to be, they chipped in."

He says the image of someone sitting at the pokies for hours on end is being replaced by young men gambling on the net. "Today we are seeing many young men who are losing large sums of money from betting on sports over the internet," he said. "They can literally lose a fortune without leaving the comfort of their own home." Figures released by the University of Sydney's gambling clinics show a 70 per cent increase in internet sports betting clients from 2008-9 to 2010-11. "With more and more people gaining access to higher internet speeds and wireless internet via their smart phones, you can gamble anytime and anywhere," Professor Blaszczynski said. He says with football season about to start, he expects an increase in people seeking help for problem gambling on the net. Clinical psychologist Christopher Hunt says increased promotion of gambling through sports media was a concern. "It's difficult to watch most kinds of sporting matches these days without being made aware of the prices that various outlets are giving for bets," he said.
