It gets lost sometimes on just how movies do after their release just because they are not number one at the box office for six consecutive weeks, so here is a quick update on the first summer blockbusters and their total box office returns thus far as of Friday, June 3.
Fast Five debuted in the US on April 29, 2010 to a spectacular $86 million opening weekend. The film surpassed expectations in a big way even after its huge release. The film now stands at nearly $200 million domestically and $356 million internationally for a combined total of $556 million world wide. Early estimates of total cumulative box office numbers for the fifth film in this franchise were between $400 and $500 million.
Thor is now up to $420 million world wide ($166 million of which is domestic) after a $66 million first weekend after releasing on May 6 in the US.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is well on its way to doing $1 billion at the box office as the film has already surpassed $714 million world wide despite a weak domestic performance of only $177 million after a $90 million opening weekend which began May 20th. This movie still has its sea legs and will continue to rack up theatrical revenue in a huge way for another two weeks or so.
The Hangover Part II is perhaps the biggest surprise this summer as it has tallied over $225 million worldwide since its May 26 US launch. Last week, the movie debuted to a $85 million 3-day weekend aided by the memorial day holiday and holds numerous records for R-rated comedy openings of all-time. The Hangover Part II‘s domestic total now stands at $165 million.
Kung Fu Panda 2 is performing well below expectations, and this is expected to continue throughout the movie’s run despite positive reviews. The film has grossed $168 million world wide after its first 9 days in release, and only $82 million of that is domestic. Early sequels in hit franchises nowadays are expected to perform better than the first, and right now Kung Fu Panda 2 is tracking 10% below its predecessor domestically in addition to a decreased foreign box office percentage from the first as well.
